The Product: Fresh Out of College is a job search service that's dedicated to helping new graduates find and prepare for jobs. Many newly grads couldn't find a job because they either don't have enough experience or they don't know how to prepare for jobs. Fresh Out of College can help solve these problems because it provides mostly jobs that require little to no experience and also helpful articles that help them prepare for jobs.

My role

Lead UX Designer designing the app from conception to delivery.

The Challenge

New graduates don't have experience searching for jobs and preparing for jobs.

The goal

Design a service that's dedicated to helping new graduates find matching jobs and also preparing them for every part of the job process.

The Research: I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. The primary user group is new graduates who graduated without having a job after graduating. There are many college students graduating every year but there are limited resources that are dedicated for them to use to prepare for jobs. My research has shown that some of these new grads have little to no working experience, which is hard for them to find a job that requires them to have years of experience. They want to find jobs that match their interests and their level of working experience.

Usability Study Findings

Finding 1

Users want a way to know/read more about the company while viewing the job listing.

Finding 3

Users want a way to save jobs easily on the job list page instead of going into each job description to save it.

Finding 2

Users want a way to submit another different resume than the one they uploaded in their account.

Finding 4

Users want a way to know if they have already saved or applied to a certain job.

Mockups

To tackle the first finding, I added tabs labeled "job description and "company" on the job description page. Users can tap on each tab to either read about eh job description or the company information. This way, users can learn more about both on the same page.

For the second finding, users want a way to submit another resume instead. So, for the submission confirmation page, I added an option for users to apply for the job manually. This way they can put all of their information manually and upload another resume for that specific job.

For the third and fourth findings, I added icons for each job postings on the job list page. Users can tap on the gray heart to change it to a solid blue heart, meaning it's been saved and can be found on the "save" list. I also added a checked document icon, meaning it's been applied to and can be found on the " applied" list. This way, users will have a clear sense of which ones they already saved and applied and don't have to waste time to look at them again.

Takeaways

While designing for this job search service, I learned that users don't like to take extra steps to do one thing. They like short-cuts like being able to save a job quicker. I also learned that it is very important to design something that's useful and suitable for your primary users if you already know who they are at first.

Next Steps

As for the next steps, I would probably do another usability study using the high-fidelity prototype with a different age group of users. This way I can collect more information about what others who already have working experience and job-seeking experience would need.
